Download Firefox 3 Day!

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Today Mozilla is due to release the final version of Firefox 3. I’ve been using the betas and RC versions for the last month or two at work and have been pleased with how it runs.
Someone decided it would be awesome to try to set the world record for most downloads in one day, but [...]

Seemingly Painless Upgrade

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Wordpress 2.5 was released yesterday and after not hearing anyone complain about issues I decided to upgrade. Because I’m using Subversion it is really easy to update:
svn sw http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.5/
And I’m done. All my current plugins seem to work fine and the front end looks normal to me. Yay! Now to figure out what I want [...]

Photoshop Express

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Beginning on Wednesday this week I began reading reports about Adobe releasing Photoshop Express from C|Net, Wired and others. I loaded up their trial briefly on Thursday, but today finally had a chance to actually use it. Photoshop Express is a Flash 9 based image editor offering basic cropping, image modification and filters - all [...]

Save The Developers!

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

SaveTheDevelopers.org has come up with a simple campaign to “Say no to IE 6!” And I think I might join in on using the script that they have come up with. It’s not quite the virus I’ve thought up, but anything to get people to upgrade and use some other, more modern browser besides Internet [...]

Reasons to Get Out of Web Development

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Here’s five I thought of tonight.

Internet Explorer 6
Internet Explorer 6
Internet Explorer 6
Internet Explorer 6
Internet Explorer 6

Seriously, Internet Explorer 6 is a major pain. Every other browser pretty much just works. Why can’t people figure out that IE6 is way outdated and use better, faster browsers like Firefox, Opera or Safari? I keep threatening to find [...]

Google Sky

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Lifehacker mentioned on Friday that Google has just launched a site similar to Maps, but for the Sky. I’ve not explored Google Earth much, but I guess the data has been available there for some time. As a bit of an amateur astronomer, it is pretty cool to be able to zoom in and out [...]

Yahoo Pipes and SXSW

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

My friend Rachel has gone to the SXSW conference in Austin, TX. She and another blogger also attending are blogging and twittering, etc. their experience. They are doing a combined blog, but with separate feeds. I’ve been wanting to try out Yahoo Pipes for a long time but didn’t have a good reason so this [...]

Just Out: IE8 Beta 1

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Today at Mix, Microsoft announced the availability of Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1. So, since I’m a web developer (and not because I use Internet Explorer…I stay as far away as possible) I downloaded the IE8 Virtual PC disk image. IE8 is supposed to default to its most standards compliant rendering mode. If you want [...]

FreeRice.com

Monday, November 19th, 2007

Just noticed today a few friends mentioning FreeRice.com in their conversations on Facebook, so I took a look to see what it was. FreeRice is an interesting site that utilizes a sort of English vocabulary quiz with the reward that 10 grains of rice are donated for each correct answer. As you use the site, [...]

Blogfest 12

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Apparently, Pittsburgh really has a fairly strong blog population. I guess some time ago, a couple/few years (?), a number of bloggers who follow each other decided to meet up. This evening was the latest of these events. I’ve met many of  those who were there through Podcamp and other various events, so it was [...]
